At the cafe we often have people asking to rent our space out for functions. This means lots of chances to cater and decorate for me! Event coordinating is something I love doing and it really makes me happy to serve others this way. In June we were able to organize a morning tea for a group from a local church called Nexus Care. Nexus Care is a support group for individuals who might be new to the country, are on government support, or are looking to get connected in the community. A lot of the people going to the group have been out castes, or looked down upon because of their social status. We were able to bless them with great food, coffee, and a cozy environment to share with their friends. Some of our cafe staff had the opportunity to sit and listen to their stories, and pray and encourage them. The group celebrates all the birthdays of that month on that day, and they asked me to make a special cake for the people with birthdays. As it turned out only one lady had a birthday that month and her name was Sarah. Sarah was pretty shy and she really didn't like having all the eyes on her but after we had sang to her, and she blew out her candles, she brought me over the cake so I could start cutting it for everyone. As she passed it to me, she looked straight into my eyes and said "Thank you very much. I haven't had anyone make me a birthday cake for about 20 years." As she turned away I had to keep from crying by excusing myself from the kitchen for a minute. It suddenly hit me that this is why God has given me the gift of baking and serving.
To me it was just like any other cake I have made, but to Sarah it was a reminder that she is Loved.
She deserves to be celebrated.
I love that I get to show God's love in this way on a daily basis.
